If you are an avid follower of Ahmad Zakii Anwar’s art career, you would be stumped at how this image fits in into his body of works of contemporary urban realism. This was a commissioned mixed media collage work done for the Dynasty Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, during the 1990s, before Zakii decided to give up his lucrative career in Advertising and Illustration, to go fulltime into fine art. His first solo at Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, with his Smoking Man, fruit still-life and sofas proved to be a huge success. The theme seems to be British colonial chic with European Palladian architecture and old Morris Minor cars, with the traffic warden in the centre, back to viewer, dominating, as he waves his white-gloved hands, giving unclear directions while a cat sits at his feet. Dressed in Breeze-cleaned starchy uniforms and the British pith helmet, he seems distracted by the sky-gliding man hovering above. The images are set against stenciled columns of texts typical of cumbersome broadsheet newspapers. Ahmad Zakii Anwar graduated in Graphic Design at the Mara Institute of Technology in 1977. A series of memorable solos led to the Disclosure exhibition at Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur in 2008, a timely mid-career survey. In 2007, he was invited by the Singapore Tyler Print to do a series of prints. Zakii has had solos in the United States (Barbara Green FA in 1999 and Andreshire Gallery in 2011), Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
