Though undated, this looks like an early batik from 1967 to the early 1970s, because of the more simplified forms and patterns with a yellow-based spectrum. The wavy movements in the background serves to help the illusion of movement. The ‘memories’ alluded could hark back to the simpler times when half-naked dark-skinned damsels go about their economic chores of selling wares (on baskets carried on the head), with concessions to vanity, as can be seen by the cheery-patterned sarung. Therein lies the natural beauty of these village women then: innocent, simple and sincere.
It’s one of Khalil’s rarest batik paintings.
