The party colours in swathes and slivers and the cluster of fluid feminine forms suggest some kind of celebration or festival with the womenfolk aggregated at one spot, performing a ritual perhaps or even dancing though it doesn’t look like anything traditional. But the thrust is more on the mood rather than set on real events or situations. To Khalil, it’s also a delicate negotiation of colour harmony and contrast, even colour discordance, but balanced in an intuitive palette that exudes liveliness and gaiety.
This piece is among the best of Khalil’s 1990s paintings.
