Who would have thought that Dzulkifli Buyong's painted cats would set the gold standard in Malaysia. In the Henry Butcher Oct 28, 2018 auction, his Kucing Sakit (1986) sold for a premium of RM134,400! And this Dzulkifli Buyong has a solitary comel (cute) whitish kitten with light brown patches lording over a carpet of miniscule love-shaped green leaves, with larger overhanging leaves with white vein silhouettes in a brilliant patterning composition. His menagerie of painted cats includes Manja (RM84,000, 2016), Tiga Kucing (RM78,400, 1994), Ibu Dan Anak (RM35,000), Tiga SiManjaku (RM31,360), Two Cats (1986), The Kiss (1997), and Rest (1987). He isn't dubbed the Prince of Cats for nothing. But Dzulkifli's auction record is RM280,000 for Pohon Sireh (1990) in Henry Butcher Oct 1, 2023 Auction.
A self-taught child prodigy, Dzulkifli Buyong was a leading member of the Wednesday Art Group together with his mentor at St. John's Institution, Patrick Ng. When in his teens, he had won several awards including gold medals from the then Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tengku Budriah Tengku Ismail. He studied art training in Japan for three years in the late 1960s.
