Description
As titles go, 'green' appears arguably only twice in Dr. Jolly Koh's oeuvre in seven decades of painting, this Green Movement and the other, Green Reflection, though this yellow-cyan amalgam profusely pervades his canvas all over, like in his Fan Fern and Nebula series, to mention a few. The green here is sparingly used, not the strident and sonorous, but one more subdued, of duller olive overtones, palliative, restorative and providing a balance, in a double-tiered format. A green as John Muir intoned, "Nature in her green, tranquil woods heals and soothes all afflictions."
The quintessential colourist, Dr. Jolly Koh, an artist more than academician, hails from the legendary Magnificent 7 GRUP exhibition in Kuala Lumpur in 1967, reprised 30 years after. His career is manifested most dramatically by a milestone survey exhibition, JollyKoh@76 (White Box, Publika, KL) in 2017, complete with an accompanying 350-page coffeetable book. It was organised by the Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers. Subsequently in 2024, JollyKoh@83 was held at Ken Gallery. Trained on both sides of the Atlantic - London (Hornsey College of Art and London University) (teacher's certificate), and the United States (Indiana University, Doctor of Education and Master of Science, under a Fulbright scholarship). Dr. Jolly Koh had taught Art at the Mara Institute of Technology, Sabah's Gaya College, MSC College (SeGi College) and in Melbourne and Adelaide in Australia. His auction record was achieved in Henry Butcher Art Auction August 2024, with the painting Celestial Flora (2014) sold for RM 280,000.
