This still-life is probably more for aesthetics, with a vase of green-stemmed flowers of yellow and pinkish hues and a cheap-looking avian-like wooden ornamental object besides a pitcher of water. It is a record as well as an exercise, an assigned task perhaps, as for it would cut into Khalil Ibrahim’s modest student scholarship budget to buy flowers just to brighten up his rented flat abode. Khalil Ibrahim won the Pahang State scholarship to study Art (National Diploma of Design in Fine Arts) at St Martins School of Art in London, 1960-1963, with postgraduate studies in 1965. When he returned in September 1966, he decided to become a full-time artist. He had his first double solo of London works and Malaysian batiks at Samat Art Gallery in 1970. He was also the first Malaysian to have a solo in Indonesia in 1970. He was also a co-founder of the Malaysian Watercolour Society.
