Zulkifli Yusoff makes several sets of figurines in tin to complement his oft unsavoury characters depicted in his paintings with cynical Daumier-like thrust. Single or in pairs, lying supine or seated and mostly standing, looking regal or ridiculously pathetic, this hodge-podge of Lego tin ‘toy’ figurines standing between 8cm to 18cm tall is a metaphor of vanity and power. They first surfaced in his Major award-winning installation in the Bakat Muda Sezaman competition, The Power Series. Such works were also shown in his first solos in 1994, The Power Series at NN Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, and Brave New Art, at The Art Gallery, Penang. These are different from the slew of mild-steel sculptures done around 2000-2005 related to Malay royal history from his Malay Sketches Series.
