The Monsoon Series captures Suzlee Ibrahim’s childhood memories of the sea in Kuala Terengganu where he grew up. Located in the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia, the city experiences a tropical monsoon climate with the heaviest rainfall at the end of each year. The artist witnessed the adversity of the kampung life with fishermen who faced difficulties to make ends meet during this time. His expressive gestures in the Monsoon Series are vigorous, imitating the violent seasonal climate. Layers upon layers of blue, red and white paint are applied with great force in broad and narrow brush strokes, resulting in an expressive work of art. Suzlee Ibrahim works in series which are easily identifiable by the place or subject. His other series in a 31-year painting career include Belantara, Batik, Ombak, Sakura, Melody, Movement, Sahara, Space, Summer, Turquoise, Monsoon, Meditation, Waterfalls and Gestures. He graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1987, but started lecturing in his alma-mater from 1993-2009 (part-time 1993-1996), after a stint in advertising. He is now lecturing at the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (Aswara). He has taken part in exhibitions in more than 20 countries including solos in Denmark (Remise Academy, Brande) and Macedonia (Kicevo art colony). In 2010, he took part in the Tunisia Art Festival Workshop in Monastir. He had a mini survey show called, Suzlee Ibrahim: 30 Years Journey, at The Art People Gallery in Klang, from July to September 2016. His awards include: Tokoh Seni Anugerah Citra Kencana UKM in 2011; the Japan-Malaysia Art Friendship Ambassador (2007) and the Emaar Art Symposium Outstanding Creative Excellence Award, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2005). The Sotheby’s Hong Kong April 2018 auction sale saw his work sold for HKD 237,500.
