When a woman says, ‘No!’ meaning ‘Don’t’, it can be construed perversely by some, especially the playful or the thick-skinned lecher, to be a ‘Yes!’ (‘Do’, ‘Go ahead’). So is the banter of Harris Ribut in his continuing saga of the ‘Fat Lady’. Far from being scornful of obese women, Harris Ribut shows them as adorable, graceful and beautiful in their own ways. Inspired by his mother, he created the Fat Woman doing household chores or even dancing, her voluminous forms no hindrance to movement. Harris Ribut makes an incredible transition from being a street artist, then paste-up artist in publications, then graphic artist, then art director, reporter and sub-editor. Self-taught, he picked up the finer points from the Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia artists. Ribut is not a glamour name, but his real name, in his identity car. Whilst Harris has gained prominence as an artist of the Fat Lady his wife Fauziah Ismail, who is also an artist, paints the scrawny Thin Lady.
