A quintessential colourist known for his original expressions of the landscapes in time and space and in awe. That’s Jolly Koh whose artistic career spans a Chinese lunar cycle of 60 years, since he had his first solo at the Kuala Lumpur British Council in 1958, at the age of 17! Artist, academician and pontificator, Jolly Koh cuts a sharp erudite mind in art theory, discourse and a magical hand producing unimaginable gorgeous colours. This work is done after his re-romancing with the Malaysian landscape on his return after decades in Australia, where he was teaching and painting. Brilliant play of splotches, meandering and blotting colours, with highlights, balance and harmony. An 8th generation Baba born in Singapore and grew up in Malacca, Jolly Koh taught Art in Melbourne and Adelaide (1976-1988), MIA, and the MSC College (now SeGi, 2000-2004). He studied for his National Diploma in Design at the Hornsey College of Art (1959-1962), Art Teacher’s Certificate, London University (1962-1963), and received the MSc Fulbright scholarship (1970-1972) for his Ed. D at the Indiana University in the United States (1972-1975). His solo show last year Jolly Koh @ 76, organised by Curate Henry Butcher at White Box, Publika, was a great success.
