This is a strange and complicated re-enactment of the advent of Islam to Malacca in 1422 symbolised by the act of prostrating in a tauhid supplication, as detailed in the Sejarah Melayu. With the arrival of Makhdum Saiyid Abdul Aziz in a ship from Jeddah, as foretold to Raja Tengah (Sultan Muhammad Shah), it was during the hour of azar. The presence of monkeys, and seven at that, is less certain. As explained by the artist Dr. Zakaria Ali in a posting in the art blog Kakiseni, he revealed that he got a group of his students for the choreographed scene in dramatic poses, which was recorded in this painting, which took three months for him to complete. Dr Zakaria’s works deal with issues and dilemmas of modern society, and sometimes historical episodes. His theme is true to the Marshall McLuhan dictum of ‘The Medium is the Message’. Dr. Zakaria Ali is an artist, novelist, poet, thinker and scholar in art and literature. His books include: Islamic Art in Southeast Asia, 830AD-1570AD; Abdullah Ali 1904-2004; Alif-Ba-Ta: The Life and Times of Ahmad Khalid Yusof; Seni dan Seniman: Esei-esei Seni Halus, Malaysian Art: Selected Essays 1979-2009; Angsana: Essays on Modern Malay Literature; and Merdeka 50: A Celebration of Malaysian Art. His academic credentials are impressive: BFA, Southwestern University, Georgetown Texas, May 1972; MA in Stephen Austin State University Texas (1972-1973) and Universidad de las Americas in Mexico (1974-1976). He received his doctorate at Harvard University, Massachusetts (March 1991). He was given a Retrospective (1971-1999) by the Penang State Art Gallery, curated by Dr. Chew Teng Beng. Besides Bahasa Melayu and English, Dr. Zakaria is also fluent in Spanish.
