An avalanche of multi-coloured light strobes, electrifying by the bright hues and ending with a tailend lighter in spectrum. Like a stalactite of falling stars signifying a happy and positive phase with the use of a colour spectrum similar to his Hijrah. Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal’s breath of cosmic smithereens come from a spool in 2004 with the likes of Lailatul Qadr (Night of Power). Other titles include Tabir Ruang, Ruang Qiblat, Ruang Tenaga, Ruang Gerak, Ruang Renungan, and you get the picture. Full of Romanticism and Symbolism from his overreaching theme of Antara Langit dan Bumi (Between Heaven and Earth) and the more earthy Rupa dan Jiwa (Form and Soul / Spirit) in the early 1970s. Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal was given a retrospective at the National Art Gallery in 1975 and a grand tribute in 2009, apart from a Historical Overview given by the Nanyang Gallery of Art in 1994-1995. He excelled in various roles as an artist, a sculptor, an administrator, a curator, a writer-critic, a designer and an educator. He won the National Artist Laureate in 1995, and got the ‘Datuk’ title in 1996. He was the director of the National Art Gallery and Asian Cultural Centre, and principal of the Specialist Teachers Training Institute in Kuala Lumpur. His tutelage was at the Birmingham School of Architecture, Chelsea School of Art, the London University, the School of the Art Institute Chicago and the University of Hawaii. He was also honoured with country awards by the governments of India, the United States, France and Australia.
