In terms of format with its 40cm vertical constriction, this is an unusual Gelombang, coming from Abdul Latiff Mohidin’s first tranches, before 1988, and funneling the view, skewered into an oblong. The length, 40cm, is equivalent to approximately 15.75 inches. There is a sense of sweeping movement, from left to right, with whirlwind force with what look like obdurate trunks slanted slightly left. Sparing seems to be the norm, probably with whatever extant vegetation frittered or blown away. This is no oasis. Nature in its mercurial moods is open to protean climatic changes. Latiff’s Gelombang series spans from 1985 to 1993, culminating in the exhibition, Pago-Pago to Gelombang: 40 Years Of Latiff Mohidin at the Singapore Art Museum (April 15 - May 8, 1994). Gelombang series is well sought after by collectors.
