Much of Cheong Laitong’s works were nebulous and amorphous, sans recognisable shapes. They are more defined by a combination of colours. In this work, a triangular shape stands out in the middle with an unusual hard-edged parallel line on the far right, like a precipice. Laitong painted mostly at night, and alone with classical music for soothe, but here the nocturnal luminous glow is absent. Still, the artist was inspired by the natural environment, recollections across time and space. His later works, especially in the new millennium revealed a brighter palette. When he painted, it was a mood piece, like a journey. Where?, he was not certain but certainly not anywhere specific. Possibly the mountainous Huangshan?
