Raja Shahriman translates man’s inner vision, shaping iron into forms that reflect his contemplations on modern society and humanity. The sculpting process shows dynamic poses in the form of a warrior and conveys the resilient nature of the spirit. In Semangat Besi 31, the figure is presented in flowing lines and exude a calligraphic quality. Rich in motion and momentum, the subject’s framework is balanced and anchored by a solid base structure. Raja Shahriman graduated with a BFA, majoring in Sculpture, from the Universiti ITM in 1990. He taught briefly at the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur. He won the Minor Award at the Salon Malaysia in 1991 and the Asia-Pacific Cultural Industry Award in 2009. He was chosen for the 2nd Asia-Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, Australia, in 1996. His monumental sculptures include Growth With Equity, Taman Wawasan, KL, Bumi Penyatuan, Makmur Abadi, Wira Perkasa (Perak), and several commissioned for the Sultan Abu Bakar Museum in Pekan. Pelita Hati Gallery of Art organised most of his solos. His solos include Semangat Besi which was held at Galeri Petronas in 2000s, Nafas at National Art Gallery Malaysia and Utterly Art in Singapore, 2004 and 2005. Raja Shahriman is undoubtedly one of the best sculptors in Malaysia. His latest solo Lok was held at National Art Gallery Malaysia from December 2019 to March 2020.
