The clarion muezzin call of the after-sunset prayer from atop the minbar technically marks the start of the five mandatory salah for Muslims. Ironically, coming when the day is done for fishermen and farmer, it is a form of supplication of thanks to the Almighty for a fruitful economic action, and mealtime and family time. Maghrib is not a time to venture outdoors (see Zulkifli Yusoff’s Venice Biennale installation Don’t Play During Maghrib). This is prayer of blessings and respite, different from Awang Damit Ahmad’s usual repertoire of the Essence Of Culture series (E.O.C. or Intipati Budaya, 1985-1995), of fishermen or farmers toiling often against the vagaries of weather, land and sea in eking a living. The day is done. Tomorrow is just another day. There is an overpowering sense of gratitude and satisfaction in the obeisance to God for all the goodness and well-being of self and family members. Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim! This work on offer is undoubtedly a masterpiece worth collecting. Awang Damit Ahmad took up Art at a late stage when he was 27, at the Mara Institute of Technology (later a university) and was its Best Student (1983). He retired at his alma mater as a diligent teacher with the title of Associate Professor, in May 2011. In 1991, a year after obtaining his Masters degree in Fine Art from the Catholic University in Washington DC, he won the Major Prize (and also Consolation Prize) in the hugely prestigious Salon Malaysia III competition, with his work, Nyanyian Petani Gunung (now in Petronas Collection). He taught at the Universiti ITM and retired as Associate Professor in May 2011. He was selected for the Contemporary Paintings of Malaysia at the Asia-Pacific Museum in Pasadena, Los Angeles, in 1988, and was among the touring entourage. He also won 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Bank Association art competition in 1988. In Henry Butcher March 2021 art auction, his Apa Khabar Ledang (from the same E.O.C. series) was sold for RM 224,000. In April 2021, his most recent solo Dari Payarama Ke Garismega: 2013-2020 was held at Galeri Prima, Balai Berita Bangsar, KL. It was organised by Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers and Galeri Prima; it received excellent response.
