Kuo Ju Ping, like Yong Mun Sen, was a “grassroots artist.” He was always there—whether it be rubber estates, oil palm/cocoa plantations, paddy fields, kampungs, or makeshift outdoor hawker centers—depicting the economic activities and pastimes of all races. Here, you can see the genesis of the unique hawker culture paintings later popularised by his protégé, Tan Choon Ghee. To this day, Penangites dine alfresco round the clock. The remarkable thing is how Ju Ping plays with rounded shapes—the hawker shelter canopy, the cemented rings around the trees, and the tables—while the jutting triangle on the bottom left is repeated in the chair and the semi-circle canopy.
