Nothing perhaps excites more than a bird’s eye view from a sky-diving perspective. Dato' Mohd Yusof Ahmad latches on to this angle in his abstract panorama, Skyfall, which was inspired by the 2012 eponymous James Bond film, where the opening scene saw Daniel Craig making a dramatic jump-off from the plane. Imagining himself to be the M16 agent, Yusof makes the ‘skyfall’, creating landscapes instead of the oval of the Olympic Stadium in London, with discernible clouds, mountain top crags, some nebulous land mass and a demarcating river perhaps. The ‘landscape’ somewhat simulates the blotchy, powder-puff coloured backdrops for his Jawi calligraphic fritters. Ambassador Dato' Mohd Yusof Ahmad served as a diplomat in seven countries abroad for 20 years, retiring in January 2010. Art and diplomacy seem a happy conjunction for Dato' Yusof, first as a collector in 1998, and later in Peru, he came under the tutelage of Peruvian artist Simeon Gonzales Ayquipa (now based in Miami, USA), and on his return to home soil, Dato' Yusof had three solo exhibitions, at the Universiti Malaya Art Gallery, the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, and the Malacca National Art Museum. Dato' Yusof has also taken part in overseas exhibitions in Shandong, China, and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. In December 2012, Dato' Yusof was made the director-general of the National Art Gallery Malaysia.
