Hailing from Penang, Lee Cheng Yong is celebrated as one of Malaysia’s foremost pioneer artists whose vision and dedication played an important role in shaping the foundation of modern Malaysian art. His body of work spanned multiple themes encompassing portraits, landscapes, drawings, sculpture, as well as Cubist influenced compositions. Imbued with a lyrical sensibility and exquisite command of colour, the poetic works of Lee Cheng Yong exude a timeless quality.  Lee Cheng Yong is regarded as one of Malaysia’s most versatile pioneer artists, having received his training at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Art in China. Upon his return, he attracted a strong following through his teaching at Chung Ling High School in Penang as well as through private lessons. Beyond his artistic practice, he played an active role in shaping the local art scene, serving as the founding president of the Penang Chinese Art Club (1935), a founding member of the Society of Chinese Artists in Singapore (1935), the Ying Ying Art Society (1936), and later the Penang Art Society (1953). He is considered among the earliest artists in the region to stage a solo exhibition, with his presentation at the Philomatic Union, Acheen Street in 1932. His contributions were further recognised in 1996, when the Penang State Art Gallery organised a Retrospective, and held in the same year a Memorial exhibition at The Art Gallery, Penang.
