Rafie explores Malaysian landscape and culture through the depiction of fishing communities, rural life, and nature. A self-trained artist, Rafie Abdul Rahman had guidance from Hoessein Enas and Mazli Mat Som during the 1960s, via classes organised by Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia (APS). He is well-versed in various art mediums, including watercolour, oil, pastels and acrylic. Aside from the Romantic leanings he picked up from his exposure with APS, he also draws inspiration from American and British artists; Frank Webb, Philip Jamison, Richard Chamberlain and Sir William Russel Flint to name a few.
