In this composition, the artist inscribes a quote by American writer Henry Miller “The dreamer whose dreams are non-utilitarian has no place in this world. In this world the poet is anathema, the thinker a fool, the artist an escapist, the man of vision a criminal.” Miller explains that non-utilitarian dreams are the foundation of creativity yet are often belittled in a society focused on personal achievement and material goods. Thus, Miller considers the poet or artist as an important counterforce to this condition, an essential presence in a world that considers them as worthless. Much like Frankenstein, who was shunned for his appearance and green skin, artists face rejection for defying convention. Poodien’s multidisciplinary practice spans painting, digital graphics, installation, and performance. Combining direct action, social experimentation, and individual creation, his work explores tension, power, and freedom within personal and social contexts. Concerned with issues of “individual freedom and the problem of obsolete, unchanging, dogmatic, foundational truth,” he draws inspiration from diverse artistic practices and everyday life, testing his open-ended experiments through public engagement and lived experience. Poodien received his Diploma in Fine Art at the Universiti Teknologi Mara Sri Iskandar, Perak. He was awarded the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award in 2009 by House of MATAHATI (HOM) and Galeri Chandan.
