Though this work might seem like a decorative ensemble, it contains several signs of auspicious symbols. Firstly, the pair of dragonflies on the right are symbols of happiness. On the delicate porcelain, one can see the lotus motif accompanied by a pair of storks, a representation of purity and good fortune. Here, the antique porcelain bowl and lace fabric stand out vividly against a dark background. Through his compositions one would reminisce the grandeur of culture and heritage. Yap Chin Hoe demonstrated his talent at an early age --- before he graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1991, his work has netted him awards, and was displayed in 1990’s Young Contemporary Artists Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. With a double major in oil painting and printmaking, Yap puts a spin on the Western still life, employing Oriental porcelain and creatures as his theme.
