Using warm and earthy tones, Ong Chye Cho’s works communicate his fascination for exuberant landscapes. The rocky, faceted mountain scenery is carefully observed, standing high against an expansive sky, presenting a grandeur sense of nature. A truck is parked there, and workers are seen diligently working. Ong Chye Cho is regarded as one of the pioneers of watercolour painting in Singapore. His paintings were exhibited in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. Ong’s solo exhibitions were at the Hyatt Regency (1976) and the Alliance Française (1988) in Singapore. Ong was the Vice President of the Singapore Watercolour Society (1969). Born in Sumatra in 1916, he moved to Penang where he joined the Penang Art Club in mid 1930s.
