The portraiture in the vein of Basoeki Abdullah and Dullah is typical of the figurative tradition of the Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia founded in 1956 by Dato’ Mohd Hoessein Enas, who also founded the Angkatan Pelukis Indonesia, in Medan, in 1944. It is uncertain if the lady is of Javanese or Malaysian descent. Indonesia-born Dato’ Mohd Hoessein Enas was granted Malaysian citizenship in 1956, made a royal painter by the Sultan of Selangor in May 1990 and awarded the ‘Dato’ title in March 1991. He was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in 1966. He won the UNESCO fellowships in 1960, the United States fellowship in 1969, an Asia Foundation grant in 1960 and the Colombo Plan in 1968 and 1976. His auction record of a premium RM198,000, is for Morning Mist No. 4 (1991-1992), set at the 2011 Henry Butcher Art Auction. His first solo was overseas, in Chelsea, London, at the Charniel Gallery, in 1960.
