This rare early work by Abdul Djalil Pirous, better known as A.D. Pirous demonstrates his personal explorations in abstraction, playing with the dynamics of textures created by merging oil paint, impasto techniques, and turpentine. Working intuitively with an integration of compelling shapes, and overlay of drip techniques accompanied with sophisticated colours, his works reflect a timeless spiritual journey through a unique visual landscape. The rich blue colours are contrasted with an assortment of floating shapes, creating a highly dynamic composition imbued with a sense of freedom. A.D. Pirous is known as one of the key figures in the Indonesia Modern Art Movement. He graduated from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1964 and established the Communication and Design department in ITB. In 1969, he studied graphic design and printmaking at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the U.S.A under a John D. Rockefeller III Foundation Fellowship. Pirous has received many awards for his achievements as an artist and humanist, including: the Art Award by the Minister of Education and Culture (1985), the Cultural Satyalancana by the President of the Republic of Indonesia (2002), and the Habibie Award (2015). He has held solo exhibitions across Indonesia since 1972 and had exhibited in Kuala Lumpur by the invitation of the National Art Gallery in 2003 with a solo show titled Words and Faith.
