Distinctive and full of expression, Yusof Ghani captures the power and symbolism of masks through vibrant colours and energetic, gestural lines. While others may draw inspiration from Balinese masks, Yusof Ghani turns to sources closer to home, featuring the Kenyah and Kayan hudoq masks, believed to possess talismanic and healing qualities. This was triggered by a visit to Sarawak in 1988 and 1991. Another phase of his Topeng series began following his visit to South Africa in 1994.
