Christie’s Hong Kong, Southeast Asian Modern and Contemporary Art, 24 May 2008, Lot 97
Description
In The Wedding, Khoo Sui Hoe distills intimacy into pure form and colour. Two stylised figures, half-submerged, face each other against a tranquil expanse of cerulean blue. In the signature style of Khoo Sui Hoe, their features are abstracted yet expressive: one serene, adorned with leafy green, the other angular, leaning in with tender assertion.
A pioneering figure in Southeast Asian modernism, Khoo is known for his dreamlike compositions that fuse folk sensibilities with postwar abstraction. This 1980 canvas exemplifies his lyrical visual language, where emotion is pared down to essential shapes, landscapes imagined more for their emotional terrain than geographic fidelity. In January 2026, a painting by Khoo Sui Hoe achieved a record price of RM95,200 at the Henry Butcher Art Auction.
