There is something liberating about taking a dip alone in the sea, or river, in the buff, apart from being foolhardy as it is not safe for girls. The girl is probably a tom-boy, with short close-cropped hair, although the angular exaggeration of her hair makes it look like some kind of Egyptian headgear, and thus a bit of exotica. Everything about her is calm, including the water's surface, while the sky backdrop is clear though darkened, probably in the early evening. With her eyes and luscious lips, the girl looks innocent and nubile. Despite being outdoor alone, the girl is wrapped in her own 'safe space'. Khoo Sui Hoe's high point in his art career when he was honoured with a Retrospective, The Painted World of Khoo Sui Hoe, by the Penang State Art Gallery in 2007. He had another Retrospective accorded by Soka Gakkai, Kuala Lumpur. He was also given a mini-retrospective (1963-2013) by The Art Gallery in 2013. Khoo studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, graduating in 1961. In 1974, he studied at the Pratt Graphic Centre, on a John D Rockefeller III Fund award. Khoo was also the spiritual leader of the Utara Group, formed in 1977. He had run the Alpha Gallery in Singapore and the Alpha Utara Gallery in Penang.
