Birthday cakes come in all weird forms nowadays. Here, Samsudin Wahab ‘celebrates’ a 5th Anniversary (with the laurel), of what? His graduation from the Mara Institute of Technology, perhaps, or something more personal, with all the raw pathos of some enervating turmoil. The mood is depressing, what with the preponderance of raw umber and burnt sienna, and framed incongruously in cheerful whitish floral motif. What is more disturbing is the brick kiln, for lack of a better word, with a sealed iron crating, or the ugly slab of sausage-like stuff on top and inside it. Sure, it’s a stomach-churning sight and one would expect such gory images from an over-heated imagination, and a very restless spirit. Samsudin is undoubtedly a young genius artist!
