Living amidst Nature is one elixir of happiness with free water and the bounty of Nature at one’s disposal, what with the bulwark of the mountain affording spiritual solace and protection, as a symbolic and decorative form. Like the fabled Mount Meru, the spiritual centre of the universe and in Hindu-Buddhist cosmology, the abodes of gods, and “which stabilizes the universe, holding sky and earth in place.” (Soul, Spirit and Mountain: Preoccupations of Contemporary Indonesian Painters, by Astri Wright, Oxford University Press, USA, 1994). The two women clad in batik sarong are on terra firma but can be seen as nurturers against the mountain backdrop, whether they be friends or family. Here, the artist J. Anu is seen at his symbolic and romantic best rather than his usual satiric, ironic and even provocative thrusts. Artist, curator (Galeri Petronas), journalist (The Star) and lawyer – J. Anu is certainly one of the significant contemporary artists depicting figures often in trenchant socio-political narratives, mostly referencing his Indian origin. His solos like Headdresses, My God Is My Truck, Painted Stories, Conditional Love, Migrant Adventures, Finding Graceland, I Is For Idiot, Melancholic Mantras and Sacred Altars, in paintings, assemblages and installations… He pursued his MFA at the Monash University in Melbourne (2002) after obtaining a Foundation in Art and Design at the Oxford Polytechnic (1987). He graduated with a LLB Honours at the University of London (1993). His international exhibitions include the Singapore Biennale and the Venice Biennale.
