Yap Chin Hoe’s talent for painting and composition is on full display here. Here we can see the intricately detailed tablecloth; meanwhile the kamcheng (covered jar) and peranakan bowl is elaborately decorated with flowers. The intricate kamcheng is a rare and precious item that is most sought after by antique collectors nowadays. His use of a bright palette over a dark color background provides a homely, comforting atmosphere to the piece. Yap Chin Hoe demonstrated his talent at an early age — before he graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1991, his work has netted him awards, and was displayed in 1990’s Young Contemporary Artists Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. With a double major in oil painting and printmaking, Yap puts a spin on the Western still life, employing Oriental porcelain and creatures as his theme.
