Nizam Ambia is a relatively new addition to the breed of Malaysian batik painters since Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng transformed the craft tradition into a fine art medium. His works are characterized by mannered figures with elongated limbs and a rugby ball head, but decorative pointillist and thread frills, and here the figure seems to be wearing a Minangkabau headdress.
Nizam Ambia catapulted to fame when he won the Grand Prize in Batik Design in the Piala Seri Endon in 2004, and had his first solo exhibition the next year. A fashion designer and batik artist, he set up Kubang Gajah Blatik Industry in Negri Sembilan marketing his products under the ‘Ambia’ label. He had worked as a stage set designer at a TV3 station and an art lecturer (LUCT). He graduated from Graphic Design at Universiti ITM.
