Is it a parody or a self-actualizing, a figure with a tomato head in the classic pose of Rodin’s The Thinker. The head itself is pathetic with blemishes on the skin with uneven colours and a spot of pimples, and some tool stuck on the right funny eye, an eye-opener? Even the mouth is stuffed with a rectangle object. You can’t blame the tomato for being schizophrenic, a fatalist disorder – is it a fruit or a vegetable? In case you miss the point, a sash emblazoned with the word, Powerless, is strapped on the body like the proverbial albatross of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Tomato Head gives you the impression of someone common and ordinary and is going through some self-doubt. All over a thread of vine runs, demarcating the figure’s sphere. For the artist Samsudin Wahab, this work is in the vein of his 2012 trending such as Bangkai Dalam Dinding. Samsudin Wahab achieved double success in 2009 when he won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award and was chosen resident-artist at Rimbun Dahan. He was chosen as resident-artist at HOM in April-June 2008. He was supported by Khazanah Nasional in his India residency in 2010. In 2013, he won the Juror’s Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition. He won 2nd Prize in Goethe Institut’s Salon Meets Art in 2007, and a Consolation Prize in the Tanjong Heritage competition in 2005. He received his BFA, Majoring in Printmaking at the Mara Institute of Technology in 2005-2007, and a Diploma at its Seri Iskandar campus in 2002-2005. He co-founded the printmaking collective, Cetak Kolektif, and was a member of Sebiji Padi Studio and SO Sound, under which he did several art performances.
