Paul’s canvases are composed of thousands of tiny squares, executed laboriously as a form of prayer. Works from the Obsession series reflect concerns of the spiritual by exploring a repetitive order of drawing, a process adopted from his architectural studies, using the medium of Chinese ink, brushes, and twig. In Obsession, Binary, a concentration of tiny squares in subtle gradations of tones extend towards a certain direction, framed by a row of lines created by sophisticated marks. Paul Nickson graduated with a degree in Bsc. Architecture at University of Malaya (UM). He went on to practice at PORT25, a local architecture firm and as a part time lecturer at Taylor’s University School of Building Design for several years before turning his artistic pursuit towards drawings, paintings, and installations.
