Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng, widely regarded as the father of modern batik painting, was instrumental in elevating the medium from decorative textile to fine art. Lullaby is emblematic of his signature style: richly colored, crackled textures formed by layers of wax-resist dyeing, and tender portrayals of Malaysian village life. Here, a mother gently rocks her infant in a traditional batik cloth hammock, surrounded by children, coconut trees, and kampung motifs. This work stands not only as a testament to his technical mastery but also to his lifelong commitment to depicting local life with dignity and devotion. At the Henry Butcher Art Auction October 2012, Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng's batik painting achieved a realised price of RM 176,000.
