References to local traditions, myths, and cultural motifs frequently appear in Jai’s compositions. The Stoned In Paris show was held in July 2018 at Cult Gallery. The show displayed lithography prints created by two Malaysian artists at Idem Paris, a workshop in Montparnasse, Paris renowned for printing stone lithographs in a traditional way from over 100 years ago. It was the first time Jai and Zakii had created artworks from the stone lithographic process. Jai produced a series of works comprising lithographic prints entitled Jembalang Busut Jantan and subsequently 5 unique prints that combined lithography with drawings in bitumen and ink. Jai has a double Masters in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art, London (1988) and the Pratt Institute, New York (1994) after his BFA at the Mara ITM in 1985. His first solos were abroad, Malaysia Hall in London (1987), and for drawing, New Gallery in New York (1994), before his home solo at ITM in 1996. His accolades include the 1st Prize in the Murray Hill drawing competition in New York in 1994 and the Rado Switzerland commission in 2005. Jai was awarded the coveted Anugerah Akademik Negara (National Academic Award) for the visual arts category in 2019.
