Unique within Yap Chin Hoe’s body of work, this beautiful still life stands apart as one of the few compositions deftly executed in soft, monochromatic tones. Yap Chin Hoe created a captivating arrangement filled with tranquil atmosphere, inspired by the household items of Peranakan culture. Here we can see the intricately detailed tablecloth; meanwhile the peranakan bowl and kamcheng are meticulously crafted with flower motifs. The dragonfly is an auspicious symbol of change, new opportunities, and transformation. Yap Chin Hoe demonstrated his talent at an early age — before he graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1991, his work has netted him awards, and was displayed in 1990’s Young Contemporary Artists Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. With a double major in oil painting and printmaking, Yap puts a spin on the Western still life, employing Oriental porcelain and creatures as his theme.
