Illustrated here are two lovely peranakan bowls each packed with small flowers. It’s a rare sight to see yellow and turquoise bowls side by side as they usually come in a set of the same-coloured porcelain. Two dragonflies are seen flying nearby as they too admire the lovely sight of the flowers planted in the bowls. Yap Chin Hoe demonstrated his talent at an early age — before he graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1991. His work has netted him awards and was displayed in 1990’s Young Contemporary Artists Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. With a double major in oil painting and printmaking, Yap puts a spin on the Western still life, employing Oriental porcelain and creatures as his theme.
