After the debut of the Smoking Man in Ahmad Zakii Anwar's first solo in 1995, he made a return in 2002, a 7-year-itch, in Figure At Sunrise, and the narrative developed into a full-blown episode with his inimitable Urban Realism in Kota Sunyi in 2007 in Jakarta. A sense of mystery surrounds this work which narrates a smoking figure in side profile, a way of contemplating the events that had occurred during the day. Ahmad Zakii Anwar graduated in Graphic Design at the Mara Institute of Technology in 1977. After a successful stint in Advertising, he decided to be an artist and paints fulltime. A series of memorable solos led to the Disclosure exhibition at Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur in 2008, a timely mid-career survey. In 2007, he was invited by the Singapore Tyler Print Institute to do a series of prints. Zakii had solos in the United States (Barbara Green FA in 1999 and Andreshire Gallery in 2011), Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
