There's no stopping the antics of the philandering Ahmad, who likes to drive around in his Beetle (Volkswagen), going to sleazy places such as Jalan Kandang Babi (In Malay parlance, ‘babi’ which means pig, is a derogatory term). A vitriolic graffiti, BUSUK (FOUL), is scrawled in the middle, hinting that the dastard Ahmad must be up to no good. This work from Zulkifli Yusof’s Brave New Art series (shown at The Art Gallery Penang) precedes his Reformasi series. Both his Brave New Art and Reformasi series were also shown in Zulkifli Yusoff: A Historical Survey 1996-2009 at Art Salon@SENI organised by The Art Gallery. Zulkifli Yusoff, newly retired from academia, boasts of several laurels: two editions of the Venice Biennale, in 1997 and 2019; the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Art in Brisbane, Australia (1993); the 3rd Asian Art Show in Fukuoka (1989); the New Art From Southeast Asia in Fukuoka (1991); the Asian Art Today in Hiroshima (1994). His ‘national’ status can be gleaned from his major awards:  Grand Minister’s Prize in the 1992 Salon Malaysia III, apart from the 1st and 3rd Prizes in Sculpture; Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition in 1988 and 1989. He was honoured with the National Academy Award (Visual Art) in 2007, having taught at the Mara Institute of Technology (ITM) and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malim. After ITM, Zulkifli pursued his Masters at the Manchester Polytechnic in England (1991).
