The Lingnan School of painting refers to a movement founded by artists from Guangdong China, distinguished by its representational approach to subject matter and its expressive use of colours. The Lingnan School combines Western realism with traditional Chinese techniques while focusing on contemporary subjects. With a career spanning more than eight decades, Zhao Shao'ang (赵少昂) was celebrated as one of the foremost masters of the Lingnan School and was renowned for his dynamic bird and flower paintings. A disciple of Gao Qifeng, he inherited and further developed the innovative techniques and artistic philosophy of the Lingnan School. Zhao's works were exhibited internationally in Paris, Berlin, Moscow, New Zealand, and Portugal. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts in Hong Kong, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1984.
