Wong Perng Fey trained at the Malaysian Institute of Art and, early on, painted landscapes nobody else wanted to: not scenic kampung and hills but degraded, marginal land and abandoned squatter shelters. In 2010 he moved to Beijing, working in the 798 art district and the since-demolished Heiqiao area, and his painting shed the landscape and went fully abstract.
Untitled No. 24 is from that Beijing period. He builds the surface in layers of oil and enamel, then scrapes it back and repaints, so older colours keep surfacing through the breaks. Wong describes each layer as holding a trace of what he felt at the time, and each new stroke as a decision about what to cover and what to leave showing.
