Ismail Awi presents a mysterious, psychedelic world filled with fantastical creatures, set against elaborate landscapes akin to cinematic film sets. The thinker suggests a knowing, conscious individual unperturbed by the hypocrisies surrounding the everyday. A unique character from his wild imaginings is an animated tree creature with large, sunken hollow eyes and multiple branches. The hidden treasure probably refers to one's desire and greed for wealth.
Ismail Awi is a rising star who was among 12 artists featured in the Tanah Air Ku showcase at the Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was organised by Galeri Chandan and all the works belong to the Embassy. Group exhibitions include The Collective Young: From South East Asia, presented by Mizuma gallery, Singapore in 2015 and Aftermath, Segaris Art Center, Art Expo Malaysia 2019. In July-August 2016, his work made it to the Curate Henry Butcher exhibition called A Raya Celebration Of Generations In Art, and in January 2018, The Young Contempo Showcase II (organised by Curate Henry Butcher) held at Galeri Prima.
