Composed in 1963, the painting features a panoramic view of the ocean filled with boats and fishing nets. Colourful and bold, the use of economical lines and salient forms give this work a unique, graphic quality. Fusing together the ocean, fishing boats, trees, clouds and nets, it presents a picturesque view of man and nature. Yusoff Abdullah belonged to the Angkatan SePelukis Malaysia generation of Dato’ Hoessein Enas, known for portraits, landscape and historical events, executed in batik, oil and watercolour. He was the first Malaysian to exhibit in the former Soviet Socialist Republic in 1978, displaying his batik works at the Oriental Art Museum in Moscow. He was also a freelance photographer and once even set up an art gallery called Gallery 12 in a joint venture in Kota Bharu.
