Neoliberalist market-oriented policies embraced growth yet at the same time created inequalities of wealth, causing an imbalance of power. Many citizens were disillusioned by false promises of wealth and enticing get rich quick schemes. Here, Ismail Awi uses the aesthetics of illustration and various elements to explore certain social ideologies captured in a deserted landscape. In a fast-paced society where temptations are present everywhere, it is important to not succumbed to them, be true to yourself. Honest accountability ensures that you are honest with yourself. Do not hide behind different masks, living in fear of being found out.
Ismail Awi is a rising star who was among 12 artists featured in the Tanah Air Ku showcase at the Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was organised by Galeri Chandan and all the works belong to the Embassy. Group exhibitions include The Collective Young: From Southeast Asia, presented by Mizuma gallery, Singapore in 2015 and Aftermath, Segaris Art Center, Art Expo Malaysia 2019. In July-August 2016, his work made it to the Curate Henry Butcher exhibition called A Raya Celebration Of Generations In Art, and in January 2018, The Young Contempo Showcase II (organised by Curate Henry Butcher) held at Galeri Prima. His first debut in Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction sale in April 2018 saw his pricing skyrocketed, and in the October 2018 edition, soared almost five times higher!
