Theo Meier derived inspiration from the people and rich cultural traditions of Bali. The present lot titled Study Portrait Of Bang was finely painted using oil on panel. It embodies the ideals of classic female beauty with expressive round eyes and dark tousled waves. His spontaneous brushstrokes and light touch capture the persona and inner emotions of the elegant sitter.
Born in Switzerland in 1908, Theo Meier attended the Basel School of Art, a local art academy in 1928. He later continued his studies in Berlin and Dresden, where he met artists Max Liebermann, Karl Hofer, Otto Dix, and Emil Nolde. Theo Meier admired the symbolic works of Paul Gauguin and made a visit to Tahiti in 1932. He later decided to settle down in Bali c.1936, where his practice was shaped by the local culture and tropical landscapes. In 1957, he moved to Thailand, but would travel back to Bali annually.
