Gan Siong King is a visual artist whose works revolve around unpacking conventional structures and expectations in art. In terms of composition, Assembly / Disassembly is arranged in a diptych format, allowing the viewer to draw connections between the images. The image on the right shows the production line of a meat packing business in Illinois termed the “disassembly line”. The operations of the slaughterhouse inspired Ford Motor Company to apply the process to the car industry, leading to the design of the “assembly line” in 1913, a manufacturing arrangement which revolutionised mass production all over the world. The adaptation of the assembly line process with the use of conveyor belts reduced the production time of Ford’s Model T from 12 hours to 92 minutes. This method decreased the cost and production time of the car, enabling the company to reduce the price of their cars, which gave mobility to the masses. A graduate of Malaysian Institute of Art, Gan received his Diploma in Fine Art in 1996 majoring in oil painting. He is currently exploring ways of using exhibition as a medium for experimentation, learning and collaboration. This is reflected in his recent solo project My Video Making Practice, Singapore Art Museum, 2022, All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace held by A+ Works of Art, Kuala Lumpur, Meeting People Is Easy, Kuala Lumpur, 2017, a solo exhibition in the form of a month-long open studio, and his first online video exhibition @yarimoriya, Japan, 2016, made as part of his residency at ARCUS Project, Moriya. Gan has exhibited at the 6th Asian Art Biennale, Taichung, 2021, Koganecho Bazaar Vol. 2, Yokohama, 2020, Biennale Jogja XV—Equator #5, Yogyakarta, 2019, and Ilham Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, 2017.
