Two distorted figures are seen resting in their own solitude even though one of them opens its eyes staring blankly into space. Shapes, forms, and colours used in this piece just complemented one another, forming a pleasing balance of light and shadow. The artist's distinctive style of painting is often inspired by Vietnamese rural life, family, love and self-portrait. Thanh Chuong is a Vietnamese modern and contemporary artist who was born in 1949. He started painting at the age of seven, since then he has won numerous awards and gained recognition through his art. In 1960 he entered the Institute of Fine Art. Among his first teachers at the time were Nguyen Sang, Bui Xuan Phai, and Nguyen Tu Nghiem. In 2001 Thanh Chuong's work was chosen by the United Nation as a symbol for the International Year of Volunteers thus, became the first painter in Asia who had a painting printed on the UN stamps. His works were not only exhibited locally but worldwide throughout the years of his involvement in art including Korea, Japan, New York, Hong Kong, Denmark, England, France and Italy.
