It was a great shock to learn of the death on May 7, 2026, of stomach cancer, of acclaimed New Wave artist Samsudin Wahab, who had clinched the 2019 Major Award of the hugely coveted Bakat Muda Sezaman (BMS). He was only 42. It is a great loss to the Malaysian art scene. Samsudin often dug deep into Malay culture, ethos and heritage for socio-political commentary on nondescript multiple media like this based on a folkloric ditty, Enjit-Enjit Semut, a children's game of pinching stacking fists. It teaches Malaysian children perseverence, strength and endurance in a playful manner. The lyrics also contain, 'Hutang emas boleh dibayar, Hutang budi dibawa mati,' in effect meaning debts of kindness cannot be measured in monetary terms. From the Kampung Boy coming from parents who are paddy farmers in Semanggol, Samsudin, popularly known as Buden, consistently produced cutting-edge works that won acclaim. He hit paydirt in 2019 when he clinched the Major Award of BMS for Rambu-Rambu Memori, after the Juror's Award in 2013. His potential was evident 10 years earlier when he won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award and was chosen resident-artist at Rimbun Dahan. In April-June 2008, he was already a resident-artist at Hom Art Trans. Khazanah Nasional selected him to a residency in India in 2010. In 2015, he was given a six-month fellowship by Fergana Art under the mentorship of Wong Hoy Cheong, a National Visual Arts awardee. Other accolades included 2nd Prize in Goethe Institut's Salon Meets Art (2007), and a Consolation Prize in the Tanjong Heritage competition (2005). Buden received his BFA, majoring in Printmaking at the Mara Institute of Technology, and a Diploma at its Seri Iskandar campus in 2002-2005. He co-founded the printmaking collective, Studio Cetak 17 and Studio Tikus. His notable solos include Enough (Taksu Gallery, KL, 2008), Not Enough (Galeri Chandan, KL, 2010), Self-Parody (Rimbun Dahan, 2010), Propositions For The Future (Fergana Art Gallery, Penang, 2015), and in recent years, with Rissim Contemporary.
