An elegant blue and white porcelain is displayed against a dreamlike, atmospheric backdrop, with clusters of fruit hanging overhead as if floating in mid-air. The richly detailed porcelain, adorned with intricate paintings of figures and landscape, becomes the main subject, standing out in contrast against the surrounding. Yap Chin Hoe has demonstrated his talent from an early age. Even before he graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1991, he has received awards and his work was displayed in 1990's Young Contemporary Artists Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. His first solo exhibition titled The Oriental Passage was held at Art Space Aoki, Shizuoka, Japan in 2001. With a double major in oil painting and printmaking, Yap puts a spin on the Western still life painting by employing Oriental porcelain and creatures as his theme.
